You should worm both the bitch and her puppies every 2 weeks from when the puppies are 2 weeks of age until they are 12 weeks of age. Thereafter, both the mum and her puppies can be wormed once every three months. As young dogs are still growing and developing, some vets recommend you worm once a month between the ages of 12 weeks and six months, and then move onto a three monthly routine. Pregnant bitches should only be wormed following a risk-benefit assessment by a veterinary surgeon. Most adult dogs should be wormed every three months. Greencross Vets recommends that you deworm your pregnant dog 10 days prior to when she is scheduled to give birth. Then, deworm her every three weeks as long as she is nursing her puppies in order to prevent her from transmitting parasites through her milk. It's important that you only use a dewormer that is safe for pregnant dogs.If Echinococcus tapeworms are a problem in your area, three to six-weekly treatments are recommended instead. Female dogs should be wormed before mating, then from at least day 42 of pregnancy and fortnightly while the pups are suckling.A puppy should be wormed as early as two weeks of age. By the time a puppy is old enough to go to a new, forever home (ideally 8 weeks of age, after weaning) it’s vital to maintain a deworming program to ensure your pet stays healthy and comfortable.

Rather than one big dose every 12 weeks the approach for pregnant dogs shifts to little and often, with small doses given daily as the pregnancy hits mid-term all the way through until after the puppies have been born. This keeps any individual dose down, but keeps the active ingredients pumping around their systems – so keeping them worm free.

A bitch taken on as a rescue to whelp, or a bitch from an unknown background may need to be wormed with greater emphasis, and so please do seek and follow vet advice on this. I worm our dogs once every 5 – 6 months.

Do puppies need worming at 8 weeks old?

The reason we avoid the next wormer being due at 8 weeks is because 99% of well bred puppies are collected at 8 weeks of age, and within a day or two go and have their first vaccination.
