Rancidity. If your macadamias have a chemical smell that reminds you of paint, or taste bitter, they're rancid. That's, again, caused by high temperature, and access to air.
How long are macadamia nuts good for?
The healthy oils in macadamias can spoil if the nuts are not stored properly. They keep for up to three months in an airtight container in the refrigerator. However, you may not know that they can also be frozen. Storing them in the freezer will keep them fresh for three to six months.
Can you get sick from macadamia nuts?
The symptoms of macadamia nut poisoning are typically non-fatal and resolve within 48 hours. Weakness is the most common sign, followed by lethargy, lack of muscle control, tremors, and fever.
What can I do with rancid macadamia nuts?
Just toasting them in a dry pan or oven should be enough to revive them, but they'll also go in any recipe that requires nuts. We got through most of ours by toasting them with spices, to eat as nibbles or to add crunch to soups, stews and salads.
