Chlorine bleach, phenols and ammonia can all have dangerous vapors that can cause irritation, toxicosis and even death in pet birds. Common household aerosol products, such as perfume, deodorant and hairspray, can cause respiratory problems in birds as well.

Chlorine bleach is especially toxic to birds. A recent report in a veterinary journal said that seven of 35 birds in an aviary died when bleach was used without diluting it properly.

White distilled vinegar and water: I use a cup or two per gallon of water. This cleans everything from cages to mirrors. I use this solution and soapy water, as above, as my main general house cleaners. Steam: If you have a bird that manages to get food into toy and cage crevices, this is a great method of cleaning.
