Often misinterpreted as filler, the truth about corn gluten meal in dog food is simple: it's an excellent source of protein and amino acids for your dog. After removing the starch, germ, and bran from kernels of corn, the remaining corn gluten is ground into a meal that contains highly concentrated amounts of protein.


Is cornmeal okay for dogs?

In general, we don't recommend it for dogs. While dogs have been fed cornmeal (as a filler in dog food) for decades, that doesn't make it healthy. Corn is not part of the canine diet, many dogs have trouble digesting it, and most cornmeal these days is made from nutritionally poor, mass-produced corn.

Is corn gluten meal the same as corn meal?

When treating your yard with corn meal, it's important to use the right product. Corn meal and corn gluten meal (CGM) originate from whole kernels of corn, but they're used for very different purposes. The corn meal you use as a coating for food is ground up corn, while corn gluten meal is a byproduct of this process.

Is corn flour good for dogs?

Cornflour. Often used as a thickener in many types of dog foods, cornflour is also completely safe in your pet's meals, though, again, it doesn't add much in nutritional value. It is particularly useful if you like to make your own treats and if your dog is gluten-free.
