Is it dangerous for my dog to eat poop? Eating poo is a normal behaviour for dogs and although it's disgusting to us it's usually relatively harmless. Even though your dog may enjoy dining on dung, it's probably something to be discouraged as there is always the risk of parasites, viruses and bacteria.


Can a dog get sick from eating poop?

There is even a scientific name to describe the phenomenon: coprophagia. Coprophagia is usually harmless, but can sometimes spread an infectious disease or parasite to your dog. It can also cause gastroenteritis that results in vomiting and diarrhea.

How common is poop eating in dogs?

According to PetMD, it's actually considered normal — even common — for dogs to eat the droppings of other non-canine animals. But, it's relatively unusual for adult dogs to eat their own poop. The scientific term for poop eating is coprophagia.
