Dogs are social animals and love being with people. So being removed from this can cause some mild stress. It can help you to set clear house rules and boundaries in a non-threatening and calm way. However, if the dog is anxious already or experiences more than just mild stress time-out should NOT be used.
Is it OK to put my puppy in timeout?
Time out works as a form of negative punishment. This means that something the dog likes is taken away from them in order to reduce an unwanted behaviour. Usually, the 'thing' that is taken away is social contact.
How long do you give a dog time out?
Time out should not last more than 3 minutes (typically 1-2 minutes is enough) or until the dog has been calm and quiet for a brief period (15-30 seconds). Initially, waiting for the dog to calm down can take some time.
