What happens if I Underfeed my dog?

Being “skin and bone” is not the only sign that a dog is underfed. As mentioned above, when a dog's ribs and hip bones are not covered in muscle, even though it may give the overall impression of being fit, it is suffering from a nutritional deficiency (a lack of protein or amino acids) or it simply needs more food.

Should I feed my dog more than recommended?

Though there's no hard-and-fast rule to how often a dog should eat, twice a day is generally a good place to start. However, more important than feeding frequency is meal portion size. Portion size may vary based on breed, age, and health condition, and settling on the right amount can be tricky.

Should dogs eat until they are full?

The vast majority of dogs, however, will stop eating once they've had enough. They might eat to the point of nausea, or until they throw up, but rarely, if ever, until they die. Dogs, cats, horses, and goats have all been known to eat themselves to death. But again, this only happens rarely.

How do I know if I am feeding my dog too much?

Does your dog look heftier than other dogs his size, especially around the waist? He's probably eating too much. It can be difficult to judge when a dog is overweight, but this is a sure-fire sign that the animal is eating too much. A healthy dog should have a defined waist that can clearly be seen even under long fur.
