Can a dog survive lungworm?

Different to intestinal worms, such as the tapeworm and roundworm, adult lungworm live in the heart and blood vessels of the lungs of dogs, which can be life threatening if left untreated.

Are lungworms fatal?

Lungworm infections may be asymptomatic, or cause mild to severe respiratory signs due to bronchopneumonia, sometimes complicated by pleural effusion or pneumothorax, and cats show nasal discharge, tachypnoea, dyspnoea and/or coughing. The disease can be fatal.

What happens if my dog has lungworm?

In the dog, ringworm lesions usually appear as areas of hair loss (alopecia) that are roughly circular. As these circular lesions enlarge, the central area heals, and hair may begin to regrow in the middle of the lesion. The affected hair shafts are fragile and easily broken.
