How can you tell if you are underfeeding your dog?
There is very little fat on the dog, and its ribs and hip bones are clearly visible. Its chest is narrow and the shoulders and thighs do not stand out from the line of the body. Being “skin and bone” is not the only sign that a dog is underfed.

Overhead Inspection – With a healthy body weight, a dog will have a shape similar to that of an hourglass figure, and your ought to be able to see it by standing just in front of its face and looking down. Ideally you will be able to see its waist tucked behind its ribs.
Should you be able to feel your dog's ribs?
You should be able to feel the ribs with a slight covering of muscle over them, but they shouldn't be visible, feel like sharp ridges or be poking out. It's important to really feel them with your fingertips rather than just looking, as many dogs' coats will hide the ribs from view.
Can you over feed an underweight dog?
For a markedly underweight dog that truly looks starved, an even higher fat content in the diet is recommended... but remember to start out slowly! Do not overfeed with too much at any single feeding.
