Is rabies transmitted through blood or saliva?

【Expert answer】
Any Q

It's transmitted through the saliva a few days before death when the animal "sheds" the virus. Rabies is not transmitted through the blood, urine or feces of an infected animal, nor is it spread airborne through the open environment. Because it affects the nervous system, most rabid animals behave abnormally.

Is rabies transmittable through saliva?

Rabies virus is transmitted through direct contact (such as through broken skin or mucous membranes in the eyes, nose, or mouth) with saliva or brain/nervous system tissue from an infected animal. People usually get rabies from the bite of a rabid animal.

Does rabies transmit through blood?

Rabies is not spread by blood, urine or feces. Infected animals can only transmit rabies after the initial signs of illness begin. In nature, wildlife such as raccoons, skunks, foxes and bats serve as the major animals that have the virus and can spread it to other animals or people (known as reservoirs).

Can rabies spread without saliva?

Rabies is only transmitted by animal bites: FALSE. Bites are the most common mode of Rabies transmission but the virus can be transmitted when saliva enters any open wound or mucus membrane (such as the mouth, nose, or eye). As a result, licks or scratches from rabid animals can also transmit the virus.
