In August 2021, researchers from Tufts University published a study that indicated that peas may be a leading dog food ingredient contributing to a rise in diet-associated canine heart disease (DCM) in dogs. 10 авг. 2021 г.

Why are peas not good for dogs?

Don't give them to dogs that have kidney problems. Peas contain purines, a naturally occurring chemical compound, also found in some food and drinks. Purines produce uric acid that's filtered through the kidneys. Too much uric acid can lead to kidney stones and other kidney conditions.

Are peas a good ingredient in dog food?

Peas are an excellent source of carbohydrates, fibre, protein, and many essential vitamins and minerals. They provide most of the essential amino acids required by dogs. Peas contain insoluble fibre, soluble fibre, and resistant starch which provide benefits for the digestive system.

Are peas hard for dogs to digest?

Peas contain natural sugars and by eating fresh peas you ensure that the natural sugars turn into a starch. Sugar snap peas are probably the easiest for dogs to digest and they can eat the pod! Raw peas are fine, but will be harder for your dog to break down and so they may miss out on some of the above benefits.

Why do they put peas in dog food?

This is a concern with almost all kibble pet foods. Kibble has to contain starch to hold its shape and the starch of choice in grain free pet food is peas/legumes. Pet food regulations require only a minimum of protein, fat, fiber, and minimums (with just a few maximums) of required vitamins and minerals.
