Should you be able to see a dog's spine?
Feel your dog's spine Perform the same test on your dog's spine by running your hands over it gently. Again, you should be able to feel the bones, but they shouldn't be protruding. If you can't feel the bones, or they seem to be buried under fat, you have an overweight dog.

Its something to catch a hold of if someone comes to the door as well. According to what I've read you should be able to see their last 3 ribs when stood normally at rest. But the show whippets tend to be much beefier.
