Causes. Coccidiosis is caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Eimeria. These are obligated intracellular parasites with complex life cycles including sexual and asexual stages.

Coccidiosis is caused by protozoa of the phylum Apicomplexa, family Eimeriidae. In poultry, most species belong to the genus Eimeria and infect various sites in the intestine.

How do chickens get coccidia?

Coccidia are spread through the feces of infected birds. If feces are in the bedding, they're on the birds' feathers. And if feces are on the feathers, the birds will ingest them while preening (using their beaks to clean themselves). Replace wet bedding around waterers and add bedding to any problem spots.

How do you prevent coccidiosis in chickens?

Control. One of the easiest ways to control coccidiosis is to purchase vaccinated birds. Vaccines are given at the hatchery on the day of hatch. Once the animals have developed immunity, they will be resistant to the strains of coccidia used in the vaccine they received.

How do you get rid of coccidia?

The most common drug used to treat coccidiosis is a sulfa-class antibiotic, sulfadimethoxine. It is typically administered for 5-20 days. Some formulations of this medication are pleasant-tasting and most cats will readily accept them. If the sulfa drug is not effective, other treatments are available.
