Commonly referred to as "bloat," GDV occurs when a dog's stomach fills with gas, food, or fluid and subsequently twists. GDV develops without warning and can progress quickly. It is always an emergency. Stomach distension alone is referred to as a “simple bloat”, or dilatation.
What causes a distended stomach in dogs?
Various internal diseases can cause fluid build-up in the abdominal area. This build-up can cause a condition called ascites. Heart failure, liver disease, kidney failure, intestinal problems, and tumors can all cause this condition. Parasites can also be the culprit.
How do you treat a dog's distended stomach?
GDV requires surgery to correct, specifically a procedure called "gastropexy." Stomach bloat is a condition your dog will not survive without surgical treatment. If you do not or aren't able to move forward with the surgery, euthanasia is likely the only other option.
