Red, irregular blotches appear on the skin that are dark red in color, sometimes turning a purple hue. They can appear anywhere on the body but in leptospirosis are often seen on the lower legs and the palatte.

Does leptospirosis have a rash?

The classic finding is redness in the conjunctivae of the eyes. This occurs early in the course of the illness. Occasionally patients develop a transient petechial rash (small red, purple, or brown spots) that can involve the palate. If present, the rash often lasts less than 24 hours.

Does leptospirosis affect skin?

Leptospira bacteria usually enter the body through skin cuts or abrasions, and occasionally through the lining of the mouth, nose, and eyes.

Does leptospirosis make you itchy?

The infection is characterized by flu-like symptoms which can appear 2 to 30 days (usually 7 to 10 days) after exposure to the bacteria. Symptoms include sudden fever, headache, muscle pain, chills, red itchy eyes, difficulty urinating, a skin rash, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

How do I know if I have leptospirosis?

To check for leptospirosis, your doctor does a simple blood test and examines the blood for antibodies. These are organisms your body produces to fight the bacteria. If you have had the disease in your system before, the blood test may give a false positive (or show antibodies from the previous infection).
