In order to easily tell the difference between breed sizes, dog breeders actually have a whole dog sizing system. Per this measurement method, a dog has to weigh at least 50 pounds (sometimes 70 pounds) and have a height of around 24 inches to be considered a large-breed dog.
Is 60 lbs a large dog?
Dogs weighing around 30 pounds (14 kg) or less are generally considered small dogs and any breed over 55 pounds (25 kg) is usually considered a large dog.
Is my dog large or extra large?
As a rule of thumb, a dog whose adult weight will be over 100lbs is usually considered to be an extra large dog. When I'm talking about extra large breed dogs on this page, I'm going to include those breeds who consistently produce males that weigh between 95lbs and 200lbs, or are over 24" tall (at the shoulders).
