What exactly is parvo?
Canine Parvovirus, often just called parvo, is a highly contagious viral disease that can be fatal. This virus attacks the intestinal tract of dogs and puppies causing vomiting and diarrhea. Dogs stop eating and become at high risk for dehydration making hospitalization necessary.

Some of the signs of parvovirus include lethargy; loss of appetite; abdominal pain and bloating; fever or low body temperature (hypothermia); vomiting; and severe, often bloody, diarrhea. Persistent vomiting and diarrhea can cause rapid dehydration, and damage to the intestines and immune system can cause septic shock.

Parvo in puppies is caused by the canine parvovirus. This virus is highly contagious and spreads through direct contact with an infected dog or by indirect contact with a contaminated object. Your puppy is exposed to the parvovirus every time he sniffs, licks, or consumes infected feces.

Parvovirus B19 can cause severe anemia (a condition in which the body doesn't have enough healthy red blood cells). Some people may also have painful or swollen joints, which is more common in adults.
