Most disinfectants do not work well against coccidia; incineration of the feces, and steam cleaning, immersion in boiling water, or a 10% ammonia solution are the best methods to kill coccidia. Coccidia can withstand freezing. Cockroaches and flies can mechanically carry coccidia from one place to another.
How long does coccidia live on surfaces?
Coccidia do not live for very long outside of the body. They may survive for a week in intact feces, but the parasites will die within a few days on clean surfaces that are exposed to direct sunlight.
Does bleach kill coccidia on surfaces?
Steam cleaning is by far the best way to disinfect. The ONLY OTHER WAY to kill coccidia is to use a 10% ammonia solution (Bleach will NOT kill it) - but ammonia can not be used when the dogs are present - this is important you must move the pup elsewhere while cleaning.
Will Lysol wipes kill coccidia?
Bleach does not kill coccidia (Divers & Mader, 2005). The protective wall of the oocysts makes them hard to kill with common disinfectants.
