What was Anubis appearance?
The appearance of Anubis was seen as a man who has the head of a jackal like an animal. The head color was black, which represented him as the god of the dead. The full human form of Anubis could be very rarely seen but in the Temple of Rameses II at Abydos Anubis can be seen in a fully human form.
Why Anubis was a jackal head?
Jackals were associated with death, because they lurked around cemeteries and would eat decomposing flesh. Therefore, by making Anubis the patron deity of jackals, the Egyptians hoped to protect the bodies from being devoured.
What does Anubis wear on his head?
This mask represents the head of the black jackal, Anubis wears the striped headdress called nemes; a large part of it is missing but it still has some golden stripes. The eyebrows and whiskers are also gilded. The eyes are in a very good condition.
Why does Anubis have dog head?
Often represented by a man with the head of a jackal (cynocephalus literally means "dogheaded"), Anubis is said to have that feature because jackals specifically were associated with death and were known to lurk around cemeteries looking for meals of decomposing flesh.
