Any Q

A dog may become infected when it inadvertently swallows hookworm larvae, often by grooming its feet, or from sniffing feces or contaminated soil. Most larvae that are ingested will move to the intestinal tract to complete their life cycle. Hookworms are a common infection in dogs caused by a type of parasitic worm called Ancylostoma or Uncinaria. Young pups are infected through their mother’s milk, and also from eating hookworm larvae from the feces of infected dogs. After this happens, the young hookworm larvae travel to the dog’s intestine, mature, and begin to shed eggs. Adult hookworms are very small white worms that are difficult to see with the naked eye. They range from about 10-20 mm long in size. So although hookworm eggs are shed in a dog’s poop, due to their small size, you can’t typically see hookworms in dog poop.
