Over the years the Bulldog's physical traits have been bred to be more extreme. The face has become flatter, the legs have shortened, the head has grown larger, and the underbite has grown. These changes have been made to give the Bulldog a more expressive face, emulating the look of a human child.

The folds around their nose and mouth were so that the blood from the bull could run off their face. These days bulldogs are being cross bred in order to magnify these traits.

Bulldogs are a brachycephalic breed, used to describe flat-faced dogs. This is assumed by veterinarians and experts to be due to a genetic mutation. Bulldog breeders used stringent breeding methods and, since the flat face was common, selected dogs were bred with this specific mutation.
Why are bulldogs so chunky?
Bulldogs are notorious eaters, and they can be very greedy for food. On the other hand, Bulldogs are not known for their love for exercise. The imbalance between diet and lack of sufficient exercise is the main cause of obesity in Bulldogs. High-calorie food and frequent treats also contribute to their weight gain.
