The lake is owned by the Southern Illinois Power Cooperative, who created the impoundment in 1962, by damming the South fork of the Saline River, to supply cooling water for a coal-burning electric power plant.

Beautiful shoreline that is part of Shawnee National Forest. There is not much here as far as marinas, restaurants, etc go- which is great because it's not crowded! It's quiet and the people are very friendly and the lake very clean.
