Tapeworms may be seen in dogs and cats. The most common tapeworm we see is caused by concurrent flea infestation as the flea is an intermediate host. Another source of tapeworms is the ingestion of rats, mice, or other rodents which serve as the intermediate host.

Can worms just fall out of a dogs butt?

Sometimes the worm segments will make their own exit from a dog's anus without the aid of a stool. They may be found crawling in the general vicinity under a dog's tail, or may appear to be dried grains of rice stuck in the fur.

What do I do if my dog gets worms out of his butt?

Treatment is simple and very effective. A deworming medication that kills the tapeworms is given, either orally or by injection. It causes the tapeworm to dissolve within the intestines. Since the worm is usually digested before it passes, it is not visible in your dog's stool.

Why are tapeworms coming out of my dogs butt?

Most tapeworms do not produce obvious symptoms in dogs, other than worm segments on your dog's rear end or feces. Dogs can get tapeworms from fleas, mice, or other rodents. Flea control is an important step in protecting your dog from tapeworms.

Why do worms come out of dogs?

“Worms can be picked up from your dog's stool and contaminated soil. They can infect other dogs, and in some cases, people can contract certain types of worms. That's one reason it's important that you always carefully clean up your dog's stool.”
