A: Not all puppies, but it is very common for puppies to have roundworms or hookworms, either passed in utero or through a mothers' milk. Because worm infection is so common, we normally deworm puppies just to be safe.
What causes puppies to be born with worms?
Most puppies are actually born with worms, which are contracted from their mother's milk, while other dog worms are obtained from fleas or the environment. If you puppy or dog has worms, there's no need to worry – your vet can help you with treatment.
Do newborn puppies need to be dewormed?
Worming the puppies: Pups should be wormed for the first time at 2 weeks of age, then at 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 weeks old (fortnightly until 12 weeks of age). After this they can be wormed monthly until they are 12 months old.
