They have become incredibly popular – the “squished face” dogs – Pugs, Boston Terriers, Bulldogs, Shih Tzus and Pekingese amongst others. All of these breeds are known as brachycephalic (break-ee-cef-alec) meaning that they have very short, broad skulls.

Why do some dogs have squished faces?

The “cuteness” of flat-faced—the technical term is brachycephalic—dogs comes from the fact that they have been bred to retain certain infantlike features into adulthood, such as round skulls, prominent eyes, small noses and jaws, and pudgy limbs.

Why do some dogs have short snouts?

Short Noses Bulldogs were originally bred to fight bulls. Everything from their under-developed hindquarters to their slightly jutting lower jaw—including their flat snouts—was developed to help them survive the fight and kill the bull.

Why do brachycephalic dogs exist?

It was believed that shorter snouts created stronger jaws that would give these dogs an advantage in fighting and in hunting. Another theory is that ancient dog owners tended to choose and breed smaller, short-nosed dogs because the shape of the head reminded them of human infants.
