Fecal exams are used to determine if your dog or cat has intestinal parasites such as hookworms or roundworms. Parasites not only make pets uncomfortable and irritable, they could lead to more serious conditions for your pet or even be transmitted to family members.
Does vet need stool sample?
According to the Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC), fecal diagnostics should be performed at least 2-4 times a year. With that being said, it is standard for veterinarians to ask you to bring a stool sample to your dog's annual examination.
How long does it take to get a stool sample back from the vet?
The fecal examination generally takes about 30 to 40 minutes and is often performed in your veterinarian's office. Some veterinarian's choose to submit the fecal sample to a veterinary diagnostic laboratory. In these situations, tests results may take 1 to 2 days to obtain.
