In general, we don't recommend it for dogs. While dogs have been fed cornmeal (as a filler in dog food) for decades, that doesn't make it healthy. Corn is not part of the canine diet, many dogs have trouble digesting it, and most cornmeal these days is made from nutritionally poor, mass-produced corn.
Why should you avoid corn in dog food?
“Corn-free dog food is an important part of a healthy diet for your dog.” Corn “can assault the sugar-controlling functions of both the liver and the pancreas, hence leading to medical conditions like dog obesity, pancreatitis, diabetes, and liver disease.”
What is cornmeal in dog food?
Corn gluten meal is a by-product of processed corn (corn syrup and sweeteners) and is used by the pet industry as an inexpensive protein source and kibble binder for pet foods. Despite its name, “corn gluten meal” has no true gluten, but simply corn proteins.
