They are not highly pathogenic (harmful) to adult dogs, but large numbers can cause weight loss and a pot-bellied appearance to puppies and weak adults. Decreased appetite, vomiting or diarrhea will be observed on occasion. Puppies will sometimes die with serious roundworm infections.


How long does it take worms to kill a puppy?

It can take as little as two hours for the worms to start dying off. However, in most cases, the process starts about 12 hours after administering the dewormer. You may continue to see worms in your pup's poop for about a week. If they had a serious infestation, you may see worms for up to two weeks.

Can a puppy survive worms?

Commonly diagnosed in puppies and most often transmitted from the mother before birth, roundworms infect up to 90 percent of pups under three months of age. Roundworms can grow up to seven inches long and live in the small intestine, and can be fatal for puppies.

What should I do if my puppy has worms?

Once worms are suspected to be affecting your dog, seek veterinary guidance right away for an exact diagnosis and treatment regimen. De-worming medication is usually necessary, and in severe cases, your dog may need to be hospitalized for treatment and observation.

Worms can obstruct the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, which can cause vomiting and/or diarrhea. If your dog vomited worms, there is a possibility that there is a heavy intestinal worm infestation.
