Are bananas Fairtrade?

90% of all Fairtrade bananas come from Latin America and the Caribbean. There are currently 258 Fairtrade certified banana organisations (co-operatives and commercial farms), representing over 36,480 farmers and workers in 16 countries.

Why are bananas not sustainable?

This lack of genetic variety makes plants highly susceptible to pests, fungi and diseases, and therefore large quantities of insecticides and other pesticides are applied to the crops. In fact, bananas are sprayed with more pesticides compared to other tropical fruit because of the fruit's thick peel.

Are bananas environmentally friendly?

In terms of sustainability, bananas have a fairly low environmental impact. This is due to their low carbon footprint which is estimated at 0.48 kg COe per kilo. If we compare this to UK tomatoes (grown in greenhouses) which are 2.5 kg COe per kilo, this seems quite small.

For decades, the banana economy has been a key example of trade injustice. The concentration of power in the hands of a few multinational companies has negatively affected the lives of thousands of banana workers and small farmers.
