Fairtrade works with small-scale banana farmers and with workers employed on large banana plantations. There are currently 10,370 banana farmers and 26,100 plantation workers participating in Fairtrade in 119 certified co-operatives and 139 certified plantations.
Why are bananas part of Fairtrade?
Fairtrade bananas have a minimum price, enabling more stability and long term planning for producers in a market dominated by low prices. If the market prices go up, naturally Fairtrade producers can negotiate a better price! Fairtrade bananas come from both small-scale farms, and plantations with hired workers.
Why is banana trade unfair?
For decades, the banana economy has been a key example of trade injustice. The concentration of power in the hands of a few multinational companies has negatively affected the lives of thousands of banana workers and small farmers.
Are there ethical bananas?
Certified Fairtrade bananas were first sold in the Netherlands in 1996, and the certification has since set the standard for ethical fruit. To date, there are over 240 Fairtrade-certified banana farms within 16 countries that support close to 35,000 workers.
