Collies aren't very talkative. They'll only bark if absolutely necessary. If your Collie is overly chatty, it may be a sign of boredom, health issues or behavioral problems.

On the down side, the Collie is vocal with a bark that can be exceptionally irritating. If left to his own devices, he can become a nuisance barker.

They all have been barky. All were raised from pups and all were very, very talky. Most folks I speak with that have or had collies say the same thing. I do not know if the smooth collies are any different, but it is definitely my experience that the rough coats love to bark.

The Collie is usually quiet unless she has a reason to bark. However, if she is left alone too often or if she is bored, she will bark excessively. Both varieties need grooming, but the Rough Collie especially needs regular brushing to keep her coat clean and free of tangles.
