Collie Temperament and Personality A Collie can also be an excellent therapy dog, tall enough to stand at a bedside for petting, with a calm and welcoming personality. On the down side, the Collie is vocal with a bark that can be exceptionally irritating. If left to his own devices, he can become a nuisance barker.
Why is my collie so vocal?
Like all dogs, border collies bark as a form of communication. Unlike many other breeds, however, border collies have a whole lot to say. They will bark when they are bored, stressed, fearful, excited, curious, lonely and playful.
Are Collies talkative?
They all have been barky. All were raised from pups and all were very, very talky. Most folks I speak with that have or had collies say the same thing. I do not know if the smooth collies are any different, but it is definitely my experience that the rough coats love to bark.
Are rough collies vocal?
Rough collies, like the one featured in Lassie, can at times be very vocal. When rough collie dogs are bored, their bark is a clear sign that they need attention.
Do Collies whine a lot?
Boredom. Border Collies need a lot of mental and physical stimulation. If they are not getting enough, they will communicate that to you, and the whining and crying can be the result. Crying and whining also burns some energy, so sometimes the whining is used to just take the edge off.
