How long do tapeworm segments live?
An adult tapeworm consists of a head, neck and chain of segments called proglottids. When you have an intestinal tapeworm infection, the tapeworm head adheres to the intestinal wall, and the proglottids grow and produce eggs. Adult tapeworms can live for up to 30 years in a host.
Do tapeworm segments move?
You may find tapeworm segments stuck to the fur under your pet's tail, or on whatever surface your pet has slept on. The segments are small and white and resemble a grain of rice, except they may wiggle and move on their own, much unlike a grain of rice.
Can tapeworm segments live outside the body?
The adult worm is generally not seen, but the white segments that break away from the tapeworm and pass outside the body rarely fail to get an owner's attention! Occasionally, a tapeworm will release its attachment in the intestines and move into the stomach.
Are tapeworm segments contagious?
Tapeworm segments are sacs that have broken off the worm living inside your dog. Each sac contains tapeworm eggs, waiting for a flea to eat them and keep the cycle going. Tapeworm segments aren't contagious to children; the only way they can catch a dog's tapeworm is by eating an infected flea.
