Are worms in cats contagious to other cats?

【Expert answer】
Any Q

Roundworms are free-living in the intestines. Roundworms do not require an intermediate host to spread from cat to cat, but can be transmitted by ingesting the eggs that are passed in the feces of an infected cat. Hookworms are one of the most significant intestinal parasites of the cat.

Can a cat with worms give it to another cat?

The two common roundworms of cats are called, Toxocara cati and Toxascaris leonina. Eggs from these worms are passed in the faeces and can remain viable in the environment for several years. These eggs can infect other cats in two ways. First, a cat may eat (ingest) eggs directly from a contaminated environment.

How are worms passed between cats?

Both kittens and adult cats may become infected by swallowing eggs that contain infective roundworm larvae. These eggs may come from the feces of infected cats or from the tissues of paratenic hosts (an accidental host). In a paratenic host, the roundworm eggs do not mature into adults, but are just transported.

Do I have to separate my cats if one has worms?

If your cat does happen to have worms, keep him in isolation until cured. If you own multiple cats or pets, doing so keeps the chances low of infecting your other animals.

Can cat worms be contagious?

Yes, humans can contract worm infections from cats by coming into direct contact with contaminated feces or soil. Common modes of transmission include: Children playing in sandboxes where cats have defecated.
