Swimmer's itch (cercarial dermatitis) is a burning or itchy rash caused by an allergic reaction to waterborne parasites that burrow into the top layer of skin. The parasites soon die, but you're temporarily left with tiny bumps or blisters.

Can a parasite cause cysts?

Cysticercosis is an infection caused by the larvae of the parasite Taenia solium. This infection occurs after a person swallows tapeworm eggs. The larvae get into tissues such as muscle and brain, and form cysts there (these are called cysticerci).

How do you know if you have a parasite in your skin?

A female worm ready to release larvae produces stinging elevated spots (papules), causing redness and itching of the skin. These symptoms may be an allergic reaction to the parasite.
