Normally dogs tolerate Vetmedin very well. It is rare for side effects to be observed but some dogs may experience vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, an increase in mitral valve regurgitation, reduced appetite or a slight increase in heart rate.

Pimobendan (Vetmedin) is a commonly prescribed heart medication used by veterinarians. In some cases, pimobendan has been known to cause rapid heart rate, vomiting, diarrhea, nervousness, collapse, convulsions, and possibly death if not treated right away.

In the case of DCM, dogs live anywhere from 3 - 24 months, depending on how well they react to the treatment. In the case of MVD, dogs live on average less than 1 year.
