Walks. Contrary to popular belief, greyhounds do not need long walks or vast amounts of exercise. If your hobby is walking then your greyhound's stamina can be built up over a couple of months. In fact we know of a couple of greyhounds who undertake long treks over Dartmoor.
How long should you walk a greyhound for?
Exercise. Not all greyhounds want a lot of exercise, so it is best to gauge what your individual dog needs. As a minimum, 30 minutes per day is recommended, but ideally a walk morning and night should be the routine. Greyhounds are built for speed so tend not to have much stamina.
Do greyhounds like walking?
The age and condition of your greyhound will also determine the type of activity you can engage him in. A senior greyhound may be not as eager to join in romping with other dogs, but will love a nice quiet walk with just the two of you - he still wants to be part of your life even though he is slowing down.
How much exercise is too much for a greyhound?
If they are not used to more than a 10-minute walk or playtime, suddenly expecting more than an hour of activity can set them up for injury and medical problems. If they're over-extended, they may be resistant to exercise or develop mobility issues, anxiety, and exhaustion/lethargy.
Can you over exercise a greyhound?
On the whole, exercise is crucial for keeping your dog healthy and happy and we're the biggest advocates of that. However, we often get asked 'Can I over exercise my dog? '. It's an important question because the answer is yes, you can.
