Do dogs eat less after being spayed?

【Expert answer】
Any Q

Neutering dogs and cats causes a decrease in estrogens and androgens (sex hormones), resulting in a lower metabolic rate. Therefore, the pet's energy needs are lower. Since estrogen has been shown to decrease appetite, appetites may increase after surgery.

Do dogs lose their appetite after being spayed?

Occasionally after spaying, dogs will have no appetite for the first 12-24 hours. This may be due to the lingering effects of anesthesia and/or some post operative discomfort.

How much should I feed my dog after being spayed?

Approximately half your pet's normal serving of food and water should be offered about two hours after returning home from surgery. If your pet is under 16 weeks of age, feed him/her approximately half the normal amount of food and water as soon as you return home.
