Do dogs excrete rabies in saliva?

【Expert answer】
Any Q

The excretion of rabies virus in the saliva was studied before and during illness. Nine of 17 dogs that died after injection with the Ethiopian strain had virus in the submaxillary glands. Four of these dogs excreted virus in the saliva up to 13 days before signs of disease were observed.

Can dog saliva give you rabies?

Rabies virus is transmitted through direct contact (such as through broken skin or mucous membranes in the eyes, nose, or mouth) with saliva or brain/nervous system tissue from an infected animal. People usually get rabies from the bite of a rabid animal.

Can you get rabies from swallowing dog saliva?

The virus is transmitted to humans through the infected animal's saliva. Very rare cases occur when infected saliva gets into someone's eyes or mouth or into an open wound.

Does rabies live in saliva?

The rabies virus is short-lived when exposed to open air—it can only survive in saliva and dies when the animal's saliva dries up. If you handle a pet who has been in a fight with a potentially rabid animal, take precautions such as wearing gloves to keep any still-fresh saliva from getting into an open wound.

How long does rabies live in saliva?

Studies have shown that dogs, cats, and ferrets only shed the rabies virus in their saliva for a short period of time (usually 4 to 5 days) before they develop symptoms.
