Infected dogs may pass segments of tapeworms in their stool. These may be visible and resemble little pieces of rice. Sometimes affected dogs may scoot their bottoms along the ground. If you see signs in your dog's stool or notice your dog scooting, take a stool sample to your veterinarian for diagnosis.
Can a dog poop out a live worm?
While other types of worms can be present in dog poop, they are usually too small to be seen with the naked eye. Adult roundworms look like off-white or tan spaghetti in dog poop, and they can vary in size from small to rather large.
Do puppies pass live worms?
It is fairly common for worms to be transmitted from mothers to their puppies. Parasites like roundworms can be transmitted while puppies are still in utero. They can also be transmitted through a mother's milk to her puppies. While your puppy is nursing, it can easily contract worms if its mother is infected.

Dogs can become infected with tapeworms if they accidentally ingest a flea that contains tapeworm larvae. Worms are obligate parasites that get all of their nutrition from their host. Dogs who are smaller, younger and/or have a compromised immune system may be more prone to developing worms in their poop than others.
How long does a puppy poop out worms after deworming?
Puppies typically poop worms for 2 to 3 days after being dewormed. You may find worms in the excrement of your dog's puppy up to one week after deworming. This is normal and shouldn't alarm you. Worms can be a problem for dogs of all ages.
