Do split peas cause bloating?

【Expert answer】
Any Q

Fresh or frozen green peas should not cause buildup of gas unless you happen to have a specific sensitivity to peas. However, when peas are dried (also called split peas) and used in soups, they are well-known for causing gas. This also happens with other dried legumes (dried peas, beans, lentils and soya). 16 авг. 2006 г.

Why do split peas give me gas?

Some foods, especially pulses, can increase the body's usual gas production. Beans and lentils contain high amounts of complex carbohydrates called oligosaccharides, sugars that the body can't digest because it lacks the enzyme to break them down in the small intestine.

Do peas cause bloating and gas?

Like other legumes, green peas have been reported to cause bloating, an uncomfortable swelling of the stomach often accompanied by gas and flatulence. These effects may occur for a few reasons, one of them being the content of FODMAPs — fermentable oligo-, di-, mono-saccharides and polyols.

How do I make split peas less gassy?

Simply place dried beans in a container, cover them with water and let them soak. They'll need to soak eight to 12 hours, but the key to eliminating the gas is draining and rinsing every three hours. Yup, you read that right. Drain, rinse and start soaking again every three hours.

Is split pea soup good for digestion?

Split peas are helpful in dealing with digestive disorders such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome and diverticulosis because of their high soluble fiber content.
