The symptoms are mainly vomiting and diarrhea, and the condition may be misdiagnosed as gastroenteritis. Most potato poisoning victims recover fully, although fatalities are known, especially when victims are undernourished or do not receive suitable treatment.
How long can solanine poisoning last?
Symptoms may last for 1 to 3 days, and hospitalization may be necessary. Death has been reported, but is rare. DO NOT touch or eat any plant with which you are not familiar. Wash your hands after working in the garden or walking in the woods.
How does the body get rid of solanine?
Some solanine can be removed by boiling but not by baking. The major effect of α-solanine and α-chaconine is the reversible inhibition of cholinesterase. Cardiotoxic and teratogenic effects have also been reported.
Does solanine build up in the body?
Not to worry though, fatal cases of solanine poisoning are very rare these days. Most commercial varieties of potatoes are screened for solanine, but any potato will build up the toxin to dangerous levels if exposed to light or stored improperly.
