How you get toxocariasis. Toxocariasis is caused by worms found in some dog, cat and fox poo. Animals with these worms in their digestive system can pass out worm eggs in their poo. You can become infected if poo, soil or sand containing these eggs gets in your mouth.

Adults and children can become infected by accidentally swallowing dirt that has been contaminated with dog or cat feces that contain infectious Toxocara eggs. Although it is rare, people can also become infected from eating undercooked meat containing Toxocara larvae.

How long do symptoms of toxocariasis take to show?

This migration of larvae causes the symptoms people experience. After eating eggs, it takes at least one week for symptoms to appear, but it may be weeks or months. Toxocariasis is not transmitted from person to person.
