How can you tell if a potato is bad?

【Expert answer】
Any Q

Raw potatoes should be firm to the touch with tight skin that's free of large bruises, black spots, or other blemishes. If a potato has become soft or mushy, you should throw it out. Though it's normal for potatoes to smell earthy or nutty, a musty or moldy odor is a hallmark of spoilage. 26 мар. 2020 г.

What happens if you eat bad potatoes?

Bad potatoes contain high levels of solanine and can cause solanine poisoning. Symptoms include nausea, diarrhea, stomach cramps, vomiting, headache, dizziness, among other things. Mild solanine poisoning should only last around 24 hours- but definitely seek medical help if you need it!

How long does it take for potatoes to go bad?

When stored in a cool, dark place, whole, uncooked potatoes can last up to two months. But at room temperature they can go bad in as little as two weeks. So unless you have a cool basement, don't count on keeping spuds for months. If you have to refrigerate your potatoes, they will last for three to four weeks.

Is a potato bad if it sprouts?

The short answer is yes. Potatoes that have sprouted are still OK to eat, but only once you've removed the sprouts. Here's a guide on how to remove them, how to properly store potatoes and when it's not alright to eat them.
