Home-canned and store-bought food might be contaminated with toxin or other harmful germs if: the container is leaking, bulging, or swollen; the container looks damaged, cracked, or abnormal; the container spurts liquid or foam when opened; or. the food is discolored, moldy, or smells bad.


Can you cook botulism out of food?

Occasionally, commercially prepared foods are involved. Though spores of C. botulinum are heat-resistant, the toxin produced by bacteria growing out of the spores under anaerobic conditions is destroyed by boiling (for example, at internal temperature greater than 85 °C for 5 minutes or longer).

How do you test for botulism?

Laboratory confirmation is done by demonstrating the presence of toxin in serum, stool, or food, or by culturing C. botulinum from stool, a wound or food. Laboratory testing may take hours or days.

What foods is botulism commonly found in?
