Roundworm eggs live in soil that is contaminated by feces. The eggs can get into the body through the mouth. The infection can then spread from person to person via infected feces. Symptoms may include worms in a bowel movement or coming from the nose or mouth, vomiting, and stomach pain.
How do roundworms enter the human body?
Roundworm eggs and tiny young worms (larvae) live in the soil. They most commonly get into the body when a person gets them on his or her hands and then transfers them to the mouth. Some can also get into the body through the skin.
How do nematodes infect a host?
Parasitic adults colonize the mucosa of the host intestine and shed eggs that are passed with feces. The nematodes develop on the host feces to the IJ stage, and the IJs then find and infect new hosts. The soil-dwelling IJs infect by skin penetration, commonly through the feet [28, 29].
How do worms get transmitted?
Worms are mainly spread in small bits of poo from people with a worm infection. Some are caught from food. You can get infected by: touching objects or surfaces with worm eggs on them – if someone with worms does not wash their hands.
