【Expert answer】
Any Q

There are two medications that are commonly used to treat worm infections and they are both available over the counter from a pharmacy. The generic names are Mebendazole and Pyrantel. Mebendazole is the first preference as studies in human pregnancy show no increase in adverse effects to the mother or fetus.

Can you treat worms while breastfeeding?

What can I use for worm infections? Both pyrantel and mebendazole are safe to use to treat worm infections while breastfeeding as they are poorly absorbed from the gut and unlikely to be passed into breast milk.

Can worms be passed through breast milk?

Asymptomatic parasitic infections are common in the adult and as discussed, most parasites are not transmitted via breast milk to the suckling infant.

How do I get rid of pinworms while breastfeeding?

Pinworms cannot hurt or infect a baby before birth, but they are uncomfortable and just plain disgusting for a pregnant mother. Sadly, neither pyrantel pamoate nor mebendazole is recommended during either pregnancy or breastfeeding. Breastfeeding mothers can take either medication if they “pump and dump” afterward.

Can pinworms transfer through breast milk?

Threadworms are small, white, thread-like worms between 2 and 13 mm long. Infection in children is common and toddlers may infect their mothers who may be breastfeeding.
