How long does Campylobacter last on surfaces?

【Expert answer】
Any Q

Campylobacter does not survive well on environmental surfaces, particularly dry surfaces. It will rapidly die out, but small numbers can survive for periods of 4 hours or more.

How long does Campylobacter survive in the environment?

It has been shown that Campylobacter can survive for as long as 7 months in phosphate-buffered saline at 4 °C, with cellular integrity and respiratory activity being maintained for much longer than culturability (Lazaro et al., 1999). Interestingly, the ability to enter the VBNC state varies between strains of C.

Can Campylobacter survive outside the body?

Nevertheless, because it causes human disease as a food-borne pathogen, it has to survive outside the gut. By cross-contamination at the level of the abattoir, Campylobacter bacteria hit the meat surface and have to adapt to different environmental challenges.

What does Campylobacter need to survive?

Campylobacter jejuni requires oxygen but cannot grow under atmospheric oxygen tension as it is a microaerophilic bacterium.

What disinfectant kills Campylobacter?

Sanitize with a mild bleach solution – 5ml (1 teaspoon) of bleach in 1 litre (4 ¼ cups) of water. Immerse items in the solution or spray solution onto surfaces. Soak for at least 2 minutes to kill any bacteria.
