How long does Campylobacter live outside?

Salmonella and campylobacter survive for short periods of around 1-4 hours on hard surfaces or fabrics.

Can Campylobacter survive outside the body?

However, the most important risk factor is consumption of and/or handling contaminated chicken. Campylobacter spp. are fastidious microorganisms but must somehow survive outside the host, especially in food and agricultural environments and also resist the innate and humoral immune responses inside the host.

What type of environment does Campylobacter thrive in?

Campylobacter grow optimally at 37–42 °C but cannot tolerate drying and are unable to grow in atmospheric levels of oxygen, requiring instead conditions with reduced oxygen levels (5–10% v/v) but raised carbon dioxide levels (5–10% v/v).

Can Campylobacter survive in environmental oxygen level?

According to Kaakoush et al. [7], Campylobacter requires low oxygen concentration, between 2–10 %, for optimal growth. Moreover, Campylobacter seems to be sensitive to high oxygen tensions therefore, theoretically, it cannot grow under an ambient atmosphere, during food processing for instance.
