If done correctly, it is a very fast process (about 6 to 8 weeks under optimum conditions). Vermicomposting is considered a “cold” composting process. There is no noticeable heat generated by bacteria during the decomposition process.
Do worms decompose?
Worms can live as long as four years. When worms die in the bin, their bodies decompose and are recycled by other worms, along with the food scraps.
How long do worms take to decompose?
The length of time that it takes for your worms to create castings in the vermicomposting process will depend on many factors but 3-6 months is a good rule of thumb. The number of worms in your bin, the amount of food you are providing them, and the environment in which they are composting all play a role.
Can you suffocate a worm?
The worm bin needs to be maintained properly to keep the worms productive. Deprive them of oxygen and the worms will suffocate.
How long does it take for worms to create compost?
After about three to six months of being fed, compost worms will have created enough compost to harvest. In this two bin system, when your bin is getting full you are ready to add the next layer of bin, nesting it on top.
